What are you reading right now?

You can talk about who the "best" is until the cows come home. What are you reading right now? Finished anything good lately? What's waiting on your stack of books to be read?

I'm reading skiffy, not fantasy, right now (Ken MacLeod, Charlie Stross). But in the stack of books waiting to be read are Terri Windling's The Wood Wife and a bound galley of Elizabeth Lynn's Dragon's Treasure (The latter is being published this summer in the UK, but won't be released in the US until 2005 :-( )

Most recent fantasy I've read was Dragon's Winter, also by Liz Lynn. (And Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but we don't want to talk about those books here, do we?)

why not. Someone tell me exactly what is wrong with Harry Potter. Ok, so people showing up at midnight in costumes is kind of scary (yes it's scary for star wars, matrix and lord of the rings movies too) to buy a book. but the books by themselves are some of the best and most honest "young adult" fiction i've ever read.

I agree, though I haven't read them, Harry Potter is just as important to the fantasy genre as anything else. Some might argue that it's the dumbing down of the genre...perhaps it's too accessible, but no more than those Dungeons and Dragons novels (which I happen to have a special place in my heart for.)

Harry Potter is in now way dumbing down of the fantasy genre. It's well written and appeals to a broad audience, doesn't make it "dumber". It doesn't pander or make things simple, she invented a world she sticks to the rules, and good doesn't always triumph 100 percent over evil and people die who probably wouldn't in a "dumbed down" fantasy book. Making a book accessible and enjoyable to a wider audience than the hard core i spend all my sunday playing dungeons and dragons and believe that ren faires are a way of life is not a bad thing. I never understood the argument that certain things SHOULDNT be made accessible to as many people (or enjoyable as well) as possible. It's snobbery

I agree! I think Harry Potter is definitely an instant classic, because it has a dark serious side in addition to it's fun. I would say it is up there with "Lord of the Rings" in terms of popularity and quality (don't hate me!). :) It's so popular because it's SO good, not because it's dumb. And I just LOVE the ideas it's insinuating into young people's minds.. like the fact that you can't always trust the media (Rita Skeeter) and that the government isn't always right, or competent (Cornelius Fudge, and the villianess in the last novel.. I forget her name!! Looks like it's time for me to re-read the series...).

Just finished "Hidden Warrior" by Lynn Flewelling. Good, suffers a bit from middle-book-itis, and has a crap title, but worth reading. Just about to start "A Scattering of Jades" by Alexander Irvine.

I just read 'The Garden in Bloom' by Jeff Turner. It's a wonderful novellete that spans three generations. He combines fantasy elements with science fiction to create a great yarn. Jeff Turner is one of those names to look for. He's really a master story teller.

I'm actually not reading any fantasy at the moment. I'm reading Motherless Brooklyn, by Jonathan Lethem. It's a great read, but that's not the topic at hand.
Flicker by Theodore Roszak is next. Not sure if it'd be considered fantasy. From what I hear it's no more fantastical than Foucalt's Pendulum by Eco.

Right now I'm reading THE HOUNDS OF THE MORRIGAN by Pat O'Shea. Still. I love the Celtic mythology, and this book is as charming as they come, but I'm having to plow right through it. I think that may be because I can't wait to read the other stuff on my shelf.

Tangent: does anyone else find themselves doing that? Marching through the current read without taking much time to enjoy it, because the "to read" stack is a mile high?

I tend to have about three books going at one time. Reader evolution sets in and the weakest of the bunch normally gets left behind. I tell myself I'll pick it up eventually. Yeah, right.

Dear God yes. I believe I have some kind of obssesive reading disorder. I'll be halfway thru a book, then decide that I should start another. It's insane. And it's not like I'm getting rid of books either. They just keep piling...and piling....and piling....

It doesn't help that there are no less than three Half Priced Bookstores in driving distance of my home. One of my goals for this weekend is to go through my collection and start a 'to read' stack, and try to stick with it. My wife, well, she eats books. She can breeze through a 400 page novel in a day. Makes me sick. Takes me at least a week.

Lol, try <b>working</b> in a bookstore. Oh the horror. I'm trying to find a new job, so I made a list of all the books I need/want--its over 5 pages long, front and back, and half of the listings are authors, not titles. I'll have to take out a loan to by them all, and then another to house them. *sigh*
      • >>>>some kind of obssesive reading disorder.<<<<<<

ooohhhh, I have that too!!! except with mine i can't go a day without starting another book if i have finished the previous one. i put off *responsibilities* to read sometimes. I walk around at work on my breaks and lunch with my nose shoved in a book. I red at stop lights. I feel anxiuos when I don't have a book to fill my time with. aarrrggghhhh! nothing to read-it drives me crazy...

Currently: Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams
Last: Chapterhouse Dune by Frank Herbert Next: either House Atreides by Frank Herbert or The Neutron Alchemist by Peter F Hamilton Next on my list of fantasy books to buy/read is George R. R. Martin's A Feast for Crows. I alternate between sci-fi and fantasy a lot, sometimes it's difficult to switch tracks :)

Good GOD. I hope I'm not too late, but what ever you do, DON'T get House Atreides. It's not by Frank, it's by his kid and K.J Anderson, and it will make you want to hit certain publishers with an axe.

And not in a good way.

Hamilton's book is pretty good, and Feast for Crows, while undoubtedly lovely, suffers from the regrettable flaw of not being published yet. So, if you manage to acquire a copy, know that I hate you deeply and passionately and would like to borrow it as soon as you're done.

I'll be your pal and stuff.

        *laugh*

I already have purchased House Atreides, and I'm willing to give it a shot. I figure if I was able to muddle my way through God, Emperor and Chapterhouse, I should be able to handle it.

(See also: compulsive reader. Need books. Bad. Will read almost anything.)

As for Feast, my formatting got kinda screwed there. That falls into my "eagerly awaiting" list. I swear every time I check, its release date has been pushed back another 6 months. *wailing and gnashing of teeth*

Got to read House Corrino...comparing the work of Brian Herbert it is apparent that he pales in comparison to his dad...there seems to be a suspect technophilia creeping in as Herbert jr. moves back further in time in his dad's universe.

Oh, I love Tailchaser's Song!! It actually manages to be a good "animal" book.

Have you read any of Tad Williams' other stuff?? Love the Dragonbone Chair and Otherland series... the Otherland series is so cool, I think it's the best, most realistic near-future sci-fi I've ever read. As long as you don't mind that you have no idea what's going on until like, the last 20 pages of the series (and each book is like a 1000 page volume each or something ridiculous like that).

Dune, the first one, yeah it's been a while and now that I'm writing I wanted to see if it was just as good as I remembered. Yes, it is. Except for the 'Presently' kick he goes into from time to time. I also just finished reading the best of weird tales anthology from way back, some good stuff in that one. Plenty of writers I need to look up and read or reread.

I just finished reading Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart. It was wonderful! It's about a China that never was, but should have been. The main characters go on a quest for the Great Root of Power to free the children of a village from a great sleep. Of course, they get into all sorts of trouble, adventures, etc. I read everything I can get my hands on, and this was without a doubt one of the best books I've ever read. Get it.

Oh, and since we're putting down what are you reading right now... well, I just finished Jan Seigel's The Witch Queen the last of the Way of the Witch series, which is fairly good all in all. I also finished Tanith Lee's The Claidi Journals which wasn't as dark and crazy as I'm used to from Ms. Lee, now I'm on a short break and reading Natalie Angier's Woman, which is funny and amazing. As of next, well... I may pick up some Charles De Lint (who wrote urban fantasy before Emma Bull by the way) and get back into my happy sleepy fantasy mode. Or maybe I'll pick up some ideas from here!

A bit delayed, but at least I made it... Currently reading <i>Rhinegold</i> by Stephan Grundy. Yay for Norse mythology.

Also waiting anxiously for George RR Martin's lastest, <i>Feast of Crows</i>. The original release date was last April, but his website says he's still writing it. Babble.

Maia, by Richard Adams. Had read nothing of his before, though he's famous for Watership Down. Maia herself is beautiful but stupid as fuck - though the fun part is that she's a sex slave. Unfortunately the details in her sex slave moments are glossed over. Her world is obnoxious, hedonists abound and the intelligentsia while existent, seems remote and obscure, but fortunately, both Maia and the empire Bekla make personal growth by the end of the 1000page book, if you get that far. Despite Maia being a dumb blonde (you really cannot like this protagonist unless you're one)I liked it, but I'm also waiting desperately for Feast of Crows.

If you want a fantasy with more explicit dom/sub naughty bits, check out Kushiel's Dart and its sequels. The protagonist is a submissive masochistic sacred prostitute. I thought the books were ok, not fabulous, but if it's your style of naughty bits it should ratchet your evaluation up a few notches.

i'd read kushiel's dart, then went to amazon.com and saw that people who'd read that recommended maia. i agree, ok, not fabulous, not well enough written to justify reading the later two books in the trilogy. if you're into this too, chris, you should try acupuncture. it's not that painful, but it does hurt, and having it every week is a real treat - i have two cute girls working on me at a time at the acupuncture school, which has sliding scale acupuncture. i'm not sure i'm learning any valuable information at these sessions that could save the realm unfortunately. anyone living in tucson, it's at fort lowell and swan (sw corner) by mcmahon's steak house. call for an appt 795-5787.

I picked up Maia not too long ago. Massive fantasy tomes have a certain charm. I figured, Adams is a good writer, judging from Watership Down...

But Now I'm no so sure...can you convince me otherwise? :)
            • Re: What did I just read?

              Fri, December 5, 2003 - 12:20 PM
well, it's just that the main character is dumb as a brick. seriously. but if you like adams, try it out and see for yourself. quit if you're not liking it (i rarely do that, but with this book, which i would NOT recommend with so much great stuff out there, don't read on unless you like it)
Tim, have you read George R.R. Martin's series? I'd say the quality of his writing is far superior to anything else i've read fantasy-wise in recent years. i love fantasy, but many of the writing is rather poor, maybe bc the genre isn't taken seriously as literature - good writers don't want to take a chance on a fantasy book - that maybe won't be taken seriously?

I'm going to try a Zelazny next, since Martin loves the guy so much.

I'm with you guys on the Kushiel's Dart book and sequels...I found them entertaining in a trash reading sort of way--akin to Laurel K. Hamilton. A sort of anti-traditional housewife porn that doesn't leave you with anything but a bit of randiness. Still worth a quick peruse if you are looking to not think very hard about what you are reading.

Martin is glorious, anyone who hasn't read him should. The rumor I have heard is that he was an editor, and had a tendancy to dole out bad reviews like a mad man. People were getting frustrated, and told him that if he was so down on what he was reading maybe he could do better. Well. He did. :)

well, he was a writer for television scripts, he was the main writer of 'beauty and the beast' if you remember that ridiculous show. so many of his sitcom or television ideas were turned down that he got fed up and went back to writing books. i don't know if he was ever a critic and i've never heard that. check out two websites for more george rr martin lore.

They all fit a mood, and all are fast reads since I've read them so many times (ok, mebe not Martin, but he's my throughtful read, anyway). Its like coming home to an old friend. Purr.

Most recent fantasy: Seamus Heaney's translation of Beowulf. OutSTANDING!

Most recent sf: Tad Williams' Otherland series. Okay, I'm a few years late, but hey, I wasn't expecting this to be as rich and engaging as it has turned out to be. Just about to finish up the third volume. Also just started Mark Budz' Clade. Edgy near-future stuff with good scientific sensibilities.

Waiting on my stack: Knight, be Gene Wolfe.

I also just finished Quicksilver, by Neal Stephenson, but I'm not sure it's a genre piece at heart.

I've been editing some good short fiction by Dana William Paxson for Scorpius, but it won't be out for a while.

I am almost finished forcing my way through Piers Anthony's Firefly, which is supposed to be a 'horror' novel...the only thing horrifying is the sheer amount of pornography in it.

I lost count of the intercourse after skimming several dozen couplings and had to completely skip those where children are having sex with either other kids or adults.

The only reason I haven't just returned it to the library unfinished is I want to find out what the mysterious sex pheremone emitting monster is...I am almost there. One of the few reads I have managed lately that I recommend AGAINST. Glad I didn't buy it.

You are the first person that I know of, besides myself, to read that book. I don't even want to know what dark obscure corner of Mr. Anthony's mind that came out of. I think that is one that he could have left unwritten.

*Completely* different than what I thought it might be. And yes, the amount of pornography was a bit much. Like you I skipped some of the sex stuff, but had to finish it because **I just had to know**. And then when I knew...meh. Thumbs down for Mr. Anthony on that one.

The Priestess of Avalon and the rest of the books in that series are fantastic. Have you read the others? When you read the others you will realize that she didn't write them in order, but they are fairly easy to follow. She is such a great writer.

Please forgive me for correcting you, but MZB *WAS* a great writer. She passed away about 2 or 3 years ago, in October. (I have the exact year somewhere...) But if you read The Sword & Sorceress intros. in the last 3 (? I think it was 3...?) books, it tells you of her being ill, and then her passing. With any luck, Diana hopes to take on the duty of continuing the S & S series. When I spoke to Diana on New Years, she said it would depend on how well the first one she edits does in sales, as to whether the publishers will want to keep it going. Offhand, I can't recall if that will be XX or XXI, but I hope folks will buy it and keep it alive.

      the eye of the world

pretty classic stuff. just never got around to it before. i appreciate that his character's names can be pronounced. (not fond of apostrophies and 7 consonants in a row).

New to this Tribe. I have really enjoyed seeing what everyone is reading.

Currently I am rereading "Queen of Camelot" -Nancy McKenzie It is okay but Mists of Avalon kicks it's ass all over the place. I am a big sucker for any Arthurian ledgend.

On the list waiting to be read are:
        FoxMask-Julitte Mielner
        Staying Dead-(don't remember author)
        Paladins-(don't remember auther)
        Iron Council-China Mieville
        Mary Steward's Merlin Trilogy-Mary Steward

I agree with you Jared Eye of the world is a great book too bad the series degenerated so much.

Ghosts of Tsavo by Philip Caputo-- non fiction about man-eater lions by the author of one of the best Viet Nam books--A Rumour of War.

next in line is fantasy either Dark Tower by Stephen King, Morgawr by Terry Brooks or Sanctuary by Elizabeth Abbey.

I started Sanctuary but work interrupted it so I am getting ready for a restart.

Correction Sanctuary by Lynn Abbey. Since I first read their works around the same time--I get Lynn Abbey and Elizabeth Moon mixed up. Hence creating a new author Elizabeth Abbey.

Right now I'm in the middle of Book 2 of the Mallorean by David Eddings "King of the Murgos". Extremely fast read because I've read all of them several times. I just love these characters.

I guess on my To Read pile I'm gonna add Tad Williams Otherworld series...Too many of you have mentioned it for me to pass it up. Keep it up, I need some really good reading for all of the time I spend in airports and hotels.

By the way, I don't think we'll ever see Feast of Crows.....

Now reading: "I, Robot" by Issac Asimov

Next up: any number of the dozens in my library that have yet to be read (couple Weis & Hickman, whatever my BF foists on me....) or whichever gets published first: Dark Tower 6: The Dark Tower, Feast for Crows, any Steven Brust...any number of authors that I can't seem to recall for whatever reason...

I read William's "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn"...liked Dragon's Bone Chair...but found that the others (esp the last one: green Angel Tower pts 1 and 2) reaaaaaaaaaaaaly dragged on and on...

Oh, also waiting for the next Harry Potter book too! :)
