Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Tue, September 21, 2004 - 7:59 AMI highly recommend 'The Pendragon Cycle', by Stephen Lawhead:
www.amazon.com/exec/obido.../038070613X
It starts long before Arthur even arrives, with the destruction of Atlantis.

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Tue, September 21, 2004 - 9:24 AMJack Whyte has a series out called the Camulod Chronicles. Starts with Arthurs grandfather and how Camulod came about, about the time when Rome was leaving the Isles. I like it.

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Tue, September 21, 2004 - 2:02 PMIt's been awhile since I read it, but I remember T.H. White's "The Once and Future King" fondly. -

Tue, September 21, 2004 - 2:51 PMi recall a Science Fiction version by Michael Greatrex Coney but can't remember if it was The Celestial Steam Locomotive or Fang the Gnome or both.... -

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Sat, September 25, 2004 - 7:04 PMMethinks it was Fang and Gnome or its sequel....

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Thu, September 23, 2004 - 6:54 PMHave both T.H.White books..."The Once& Future King" & "The Book of Merlyn"
These make for really concentrated reading...how he manages to cram up all these anachronistic details...imbuing a sense of "timelessness" to the Arthurian legends

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Wed, November 10, 2004 - 4:01 AMThere is a sequel to "The Once and Future King", it is called "The Book of Merlyn". You should give it a read. It is actually the final chapter that T.H. White wrote for the book and the publishers of the time removed. It has since been published as a seperate book under the above title.

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Wed, September 22, 2004 - 9:50 PMFor a twist on the Arthurian legend, check out the Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay (it's a trilogy). -

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Thu, September 23, 2004 - 8:13 AMI found that to be more of the Summer King legend than specifically Arthur. Great series.

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Thu, September 23, 2004 - 12:37 PMFor a twist to the whole Authur-ian legend ...try reading Peter David's two novels about King Arthur running to be the mayor of New York in the 1980's.
Title: Knight Life
Sequel: One Knight Only
(That *might* be reversed ... "One Knight Only" followed by "Knight Life") -

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Thu, September 23, 2004 - 4:47 PMit is reversed.
i tried Knight Life, it didn't do much for me.

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Thu, September 23, 2004 - 5:31 PMI rather enjoyed Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy consisting of:
The Crystal Cave
The Hollow Hills
The Last Enchanment
It is actually told from Merlin's viewpoint, from the time of his (Merlin's) childhood through the years of Arthur's reign. I found the characters and their relationships to be very interesting. It's not so much a 'fantasy' book, but as it does deal with the Arthurian legend, I think it qualifies here. -

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Wed, November 10, 2004 - 4:03 AMThere is a 4th book to this "trilogy". It is called "The Wicked Day" unless I am mistaken... Time for me to go check my shelves...

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Thu, September 23, 2004 - 5:47 PMI second T.H. White. It's been a loooooong time since I read it, but one of Parke Godwin's books was based on the Arthur legend. -

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Thu, September 23, 2004 - 9:11 PMFor my money, the best Arthurian re-hash is A.A. Attanasio's cycle.
The Dragon and the Unicorn
The Eagle and the Sword
The Wolf and the Crown
The Serpent and the Grail

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Fri, September 24, 2004 - 5:40 AMI remember enjoying 'The Forever King', by Molly Cochran. There are two simultaneous plots: 1) The evil knight, Saladin, quests for the Holy Grail to gain immortality and 2) Having lost it, Saladin tries to recapture the Grail from a reincarnated 10-year-old Arthur in modern-day Britain.
I first read the book in high school, and again a few years ago. It's the first of a trilogy, which I didn't know until today. The others are 'The Broken Sword' and 'The Third Magic'.
The latter was only released last year, 10 years after the first book. Hmm. What does this mean? -

Fri, September 24, 2004 - 6:09 AMI have read "The Forever King" also. Enjoyed it too. I didn't know there were more. Maybe I will have to check them out.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far everyone. I am looking forward to reading the ones that I haven't come across before!

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Tue, October 12, 2004 - 2:06 AMI just recently started reading "Child Of The Northern Spring" by Persia Woolley. It's basically the story from Guenivere's point of view, starting with her leaving to go to Camelot for the first time, and sort of back and forth "flashbacks" to her earlier life leading up to leaving and her current travels to her new home. Good so far. It's about 460 pages, and I'm about 160 pages into it.
Also, it is apparently the first in a trilogy. (I did not know this when I puchased it several years ago. I misplaced it for a while... )
At one point I was on a 'bender' for stories with harps. :D (Then it was swords... and so on. :P )

Re: Suggestions on Arthurian/Camelot books
Sun, January 9, 2005 - 1:50 PMOf course the Mary Stewart books are magical and wonderful, with rich characters. However, if you prefer a realistic slant which makes you feel like you could have been a part of the legend (were you born 1600 years ago), I would recommend Jack Whytes series starting with the skystone. The series is still in progress, and the newest book about Lancelot may not have been the best in the series, but keeps me pining for the next addition all the same.
