Since I left "The Great Book of Amber" out in the rain I picked up "Daughter of Regals & Other Tales". Halfway through the title story and heading towards the missing chapter from The Illearth War.
Enjoying this tale...he is coming at majic from a new view instead of the normal hocus pocus.

Sun, November 27, 2005 - 11:23 PMI read "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" books and even though I found the main character very annoying at first I couldn't stop reading and ended up enjoying the books. -

Re: Stephen R. Donaldson
Sun, November 27, 2005 - 11:41 PMYeah - he's the classic anti-hero. He's not only annoying but unlikeable at first, and on purpose. He's surrounded by beings with much more integrity, honor, and courage than himself, and he has to grow into his role. It's a classic. -

Re: Stephen R. Donaldson
Mon, November 28, 2005 - 6:52 AMIt really is. Even despite the fact that a lot of the core plot is lifted from Tolkien, the character of Thomas Covenant is one of the best I've ever encountered in fantasy.
He's a man who depends on reality to live from day to day, so when he's transported into a fantasy world...it's not like he doesn't want to believe...he simply can't allow himself to.
Preservation.
I could read that first book over and over again. -

Re: Stephen R. Donaldson
Sat, December 3, 2005 - 9:58 AMI'm not sure he lives in "reality" because his soul's seems scared by Joan's leaving and the leporsy (sp?). But when he get's to The Land he starts to get healed over the course of the 6 books...caring about more than just his own hurts and problems.
I can't wait to see what he does in the new Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

Re: Stephen R. Donaldson
Tue, October 30, 2007 - 10:17 AMYeah, me too.. I didn't enjoy the second chronicles as much. It annoyed me that the focus is from Linden's pov but I understood why. Maybe it's because I'd learned to enjoy Covenant during the first series. Also, I missed a lot of the fantasy aspects of the Land lost between the first and second chronicles.
I'm in the middle of the second book of the last Chronicles and enjoying it so far.

Re: Stephen R. Donaldson
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 10:43 PMYeah, I really enjoyed his writing because I feel like being a better person after I read it. Same thing for Tolkien. There are very few authors that do that for me, I savor the ones that do.
And that's not to say either of them come across as being overtly didactic. But there is a transcendance to it nevertheless.

Sat, October 27, 2007 - 11:01 AMJust finished FATAL REVENANT (Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant). I liked the book except for one thing: It's heavy on the history of The Land. (Runes of the earth was heavy on the history of Linden's first visit, as I recall). It was worth pre-ordering (better than HP & TDH) -

Tue, October 30, 2007 - 10:18 AMI'm enjoying it so far but there is a lot of history, etc. Also, where I'm at Covenant is just annoying... more so than normal :) He might not actually be Covenant.. who knows... I look forward to finding out what is going on.
