Same thing for Tolkien. There are very few authors that do that for me, I savor the ones that do. And that's not to say either of them come across as being overtly didactic. I didn't enjoy the second chronicles as much. It annoyed me that the focus is from Linden's pov but I understood why. Maybe it's because I'd learned to enjoy Covenant during the first series. Also, I missed a lot of the fantasy aspects of the Land lost between the first and second chronicles. I'm in the middle of the second book of the last Chronicles and enjoying it so far. Even despite the fact that a lot of the core plot is lifted from Tolkien, the character of Thomas Covenant is one of the best I've ever encountered in fantasy. He's a man who depends on reality to live from day to day, so when he's transported into a fantasy world...it's not like he doesn't want to believe...he simply can't allow himself to. Preservation.
