Has anyone read Laurell K. Hamilton's new Anita Blake novel, 'Micah?' I'm kinda nervous about it. I loved all the Anita books up thru 'Obsidian Butterfly.' But after that one, they pretty much became mostly erotica. I loved the books for the great action and wonderful characters. I'm kinda neutral towards the sex. A little's fine, but not the whole darn book. The last few have been 1 part action, 5 parts erotica.
My question is this, is there enough action and/or character developement in 'Micah' that I should read it? If it's 50 pages story, 300+ pages sex, I probably won't bother.
Thanx!

Re: New Anita Blake
Sun, March 5, 2006 - 12:26 PMWow, I have only read up through "Obsidian Butterfly." I'm glad to hear I should expect the action to be of a different kind in the newer work. That is a real bummer. What I love about OB was the great action packed scenes. -

Re: New Anita Blake
Tue, March 7, 2006 - 1:49 PMOB was actually my favorite of all of them. Edward is my favorite secondary character in that series, and it's great seeing him in action. The next one ('Narcissus in Chains' maybe? - I don't remember) is drastically different. It completely shifts gears. I was shocked. I keep hoping that Edward will make a return, but so far, nada. :( -

Wed, March 8, 2006 - 6:38 AMYes, it is a shame to hear that about this series... Have only read the first three, and really enjoyed them.
But that seems to happen in series which start off as slightly erotic, the longer they go, the more the emphasis seems to be on the eroticism, and the less on the initial story [or world] idea which is what made the storyline so interesting to begin with.... sigh... -

And that's such a shame, really. Laurell K. Hamilton has such rich characters, and a great writing voice. Her earlier stories are works of art. And then she does this. She still has some plot in there, but it's hardly noticable.
You should definately keep reading them, tho. I still highly recommend them through 'Obsidian Butterfly' (which is number 9 in the series, I believe). There is some sex in #7 and #8 (and maybe #6, I can't remember now). But only one scene in each. And 'Obsidian Butterfly' is pure action. It's awsome. Like I said, I completely recommend them up to and including 'Obsidian Butterfly.' -

Re: New Anita Blake
Thu, March 9, 2006 - 6:20 AMI would have to agree. I used to look on these books as a crack habit, one that I had to kick after OB, just completely burnt out on them. I'll still go back and read the early ones any day though. -

LOL. I hear you. I still like to open one (an earlier one) up randomly and read a chapter or three. Sometimes I end up reading several chapters. They're addictive. -

Re: New Anita Blake
Thu, March 9, 2006 - 11:30 AMI agree--the first Anita Blake books were great, but I'm disappointed in the more recent ones.
For anyone who's looking for something like the Anita Blake books, sans about 75% of the sex, I recommend Robin McKinley's Sunshine, Patricia Briggs' Moon Called, and C.E. Murphy's Urban Shaman. I really enjoyed all three. -

Re: New Anita Blake
Thu, March 9, 2006 - 6:54 PMHave you read Kim Harrison's books? The first one is 'Dead Witch Walking,' then 'The Good, the Bad and the Undead,' and the last one's 'Every Which Way But Dead.' She's got a new one coming out in June called 'A Fistful of Charms.' Just to warn you, the magic system is completely different from anything I've read and takes a bit to get used to. The books are set in modern day, but with vampires, weres, pixies and others.
I also had a co-worker (who likes the older Anita Blakes) recommend Kelley Armstrong. She has a couple trilogies out. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: New Anita Blake
Thu, March 9, 2006 - 7:26 PMThanks for the recommendations...I've heard of Kim Harrison but haven't read her yet. And I hadn't heard of Kelley Armstrong, will have to check those out. -

Re: New Anita Blake
Mon, March 13, 2006 - 11:14 AMI personally REALLY enjoy the Kelley Armstrong books - a lot more than the Laurel Hamilton stuff (her books always struck me as a little "simple" and not that much to 'em) - I'm just getting into Kim Harrison's first book (Dead Witch Walking) and so far ... pretty good.

Fri, June 23, 2006 - 7:50 AMCant remember the author off the top of my head but Nancy Collins keeps jumping to mind... the book is "Sunglasses After Dark"
was good as far as I got to read it... the girl I was dating took it with her one night when she left my apartment, and I never got it back...

Re: New Anita Blake
Mon, March 20, 2006 - 1:02 PMI read "Micah" last week. It was good to see Micah develop more compared to him just being the affable "I'll agree to anything so long as can be around Anita" kind of secondary character he has shown previously. I do agree with most everyone's comments that the erotica is getting too much because it seems to be at the expense of the rest of the characters and action of the story. I think this book was a short story that sets up something for the new book "Danse Macabre." I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10. But then again I'm a self confessed Laurell K Hamilton addict. -

Re: New Anita Blake
Mon, March 20, 2006 - 1:23 PMI haven't read it yet. Is it mostly erotica, or is there decent action? I trying to decide if I should read it. -

Re: New Anita Blake
Mon, March 20, 2006 - 1:49 PMI found there to be a good amount of action for the shortness of the story. There was only one big erotica scene and I just was really not impressed by it. But if you want to read "Danse Macabre" I got a feeling that "Micah" is what sets the scene for that book. I just found the whole book to be over really fast. There just wasn't much time for lots of action/character development or anything more than a bulleted outined that was fleshed out. "here's the story" with no ambiguity; just very straight forward. Plus there is a sneak peak chapter into the next book that was promising. I hope this helps you out, Lisa. :-) -

Re: New Anita Blake
Fri, May 26, 2006 - 9:32 AMYeah, I definately want to read those. She just had a new one come out (the title escapes me). Unfortunately, I have soooooo many books waiting to be read, I don't know when I'll have the time. :-/ But I keep hearing good stuff, so I look forward to when I get the chance. -

Re: New Anita Blake
Sat, May 27, 2006 - 4:04 PMHave you read any of the stuff by Jim Butcher? He writes the Dresden chronicles, which I found when looking for the Armstrong books... the guy is brilliant... -

Re: New Anita Blake
Thu, July 27, 2006 - 11:18 PMI didn't like it as well as I did "Narcissus in Chains" by any means, but as someone said before it does give Micah a more individual intimate look into who he is

Re: New Anita Blake
Sun, June 3, 2007 - 6:19 PMAgainst my better judgment, I read _Incubus Dreams_ a couple months ago. The book was over 700 pages long, and without exaggerating, I believe 400 pages could have been cut with no loss of worthwhile content. The book was awful, one of the worst five or six books that I have read all the way through. The series was once a lot of fun, but it isn't anymore.
