Re: Soooo........
Fri, August 5, 2005 - 1:49 PMI burned through it so quick I'm going to have to read it again! I liked it. But it also seemed more of a set up for the final book. Sad to see a certain someone die, though. That said, I think it definitely works in terms of plot. Really, it had to happen that way.
And you?... -

Re: Soooo........
Fri, August 5, 2005 - 2:01 PMI concur. If there's one thing I like about Rowling it's that she's a courageous writer. She doesn't back off from where she knows it's gotta go. Got through it pretty quick as well. Not sure how they're going to tie it up all in one book - that's going to be one helluva thick tome - unless she sets it up to take off on another series.
I wonder if she's going to have to write under a pen name from now on just to get away from HP and explore other stuff. Stephan King had to do that I think, didn't he?
It will be sad when it's over. I'll just have to revisit them more often I suppose.

Re: Soooo........
Fri, August 5, 2005 - 2:21 PMI'm glad it's a limited series. I think ALL series should have an end date. If not, the writer gets lazy, the plot gets watered down, and things get repetitive. Orson Scott Card, who I think is a great writer, is the master of carrying on a series until its nothing but a mash of words. Ender could probably have done without Shadow. Alvin should have reached the Crystal City by now. And there are many other examples. Dune. Pern. Wheel. Some of the last few books in all of those series are barely digestible. And yet, here we are on book six of HP, and it’s still gripping, it still feels like it’s going somewhere specific.
But you bring up another point. You do come to love these characters and you want to find out what’s going on with them. I think here comic books again point the way. Batman was revitalized when Miller looked at Batman past his prime. The central question was, What happened to Batman’s obsessive, dark energy as he’s gotten older? Turns out the old man can still kick some ass, he’s still grim, and he’s more willing to bend the rules a bit; he’s more realistic.
It’d be interesting, about a decade or so from now, to see Potter as a thirty or forty year old. Did he ever become an Auror? Did he marry Jenny and have a bunch of red-haired children? Is he still haunted by dreams of his alter ego, his dark twin, Voldemort? Or what about Harry at Dumbledor’s age? Muggle technology has caught up with wizard magic. How does he deal with that? Could be cool. -

Fri, August 5, 2005 - 4:11 PMI wrote a whole long thing here and then tribe went on maintenance and I lost it. Well, that's probably good. I basically agree with you. Sad when things get watered down, but great when they get revitalized in other mediums.
A next generation Hogwarts would be cool, too. Potter's kids - always in trouble with their cousins the Weasleys. Fred and George as overgrown instigators.. -

Wed, August 10, 2005 - 7:10 AMLOL! Maybe - they coulda been crap too! I'm looking for more to read and a friend of mine loaned me her Simon R. Green Nightside books. Not the best writer, but you really want to know what happens next and it's a cool concept. Not nearly as good as HP, but it's filling a need. Like having M&Ms after enjoying really good chocolate.

Wed, August 17, 2005 - 10:34 PMI'm not so sure that a certain someone died. I can't shake the feeling that this was a setup for some grand finale. -

Re: Soooo........
Wed, August 24, 2005 - 11:55 AMHe turned into a Phoenix and will help Harry in the next/last book. Also I'm not sure about Snape's defection being entirely true. And one more, maybe Harry was a Horucrux and that piece was taken out of him when Voldermort came back and that is why Harry can't sense Voldermort any more. That's what I think. -

Re: Soooo........
Wed, August 24, 2005 - 11:57 AMYeah, I think Harry is a Horocrux as well, but he might still be, which means he may need to die at the end.
