I can't wait for the 4th! I've read through them twice and am about to embark on a 3rd reading for my Masters degree. I'm doing my Masters on Fantasy Lit and my thesis is showing the evolution of modern High Fantasy using Tolkien and Martin for a comparison. Does anyone know of any good links (or books, mags, etc.) that provide biographical info or literary criticism of Martin. Of course there is a ton of info on Tolkien, but I'm finding it hard to dig up any 'serious' scholarly secondary sources on Martin. I'd appreciate any links or tips.

This isn't serious scholarship, but Dragon magazine has done several articles on Martin in the last 12 months, he was a highlight of one episode. At the very least, you can read some interviews/background.

Thanks. I've actually tracked these down already. Although the articles didn't appear in a scholarly journal, they were still helpful.

Very cool, Scott. You may be the first to offer some lit crit on the man. It's an interesting subject. Just like graphic novels, fantasy lit has gone from simple good v. evil to the we-all-have-a-little-bad-in-us and we-all-have-a-little-good-in-us way of seeing things. This has been written about ad nauseum, but I don't think with the angle applied to Martin in particular. Keep us posted and good luck!

Not at all. I know I've had to double-check who certain people are (Addam Marbrand comes to mind as someone I read the name of, and said, "who da fugg?!").

If your copy has an Appendix, that contains most of the characters in the book. If it doesn't, there's always www.westeros.org/ (check "The Citadel", they've got the heraldry for every *single* house, major and minor, except two), but beware spoilers there.

I just finished the first three books . . .

to say that I'm impressed would be understating things. He's willing to kill or maim main characters, he's running so many point of views that I can't remember them all, yet everyone is human with good and bad - imperfections and emotions.

Very nice series and he's quite an accomplished writer.

I too have been waiting patiently for each book as they are written. Feast of Crows seems to be taking forever to get released.

Martin does seem to have a tendency to get you really into a character and then kill 'em off. Sometimes that sucks but does imitate life more realistically than most writers.

I finished the third book five days after it was released, so I guess I'll have to start all over again in order to remember all of those colorful characters.

Hey you can find it Dragon magazine published a short story by Martin. It takes place after storm of swords and features the greyjoys.

I dragged my feet in getting started on "Storm of Swords" - but I enjoyed every page of it. I didn't get started on this series 'til the first book was already on the shelf for a while... in fact, Storm of Swords had JUST hit the stands in hardcover when I started.

So I've quickly gone through all three of these books now and I'm anxiously waiting for the next.

I just started reading this series a week or so ago. I've heard rumor both here and at Amazon that many of the characters get killed off. Now I'm reading with even more nail biting suspense wondering if my favorite characters are going to stick around for long. Ack!....I can't take the pressure!
At least the newest novel should be out by the time I get through the first books of the series.

      Heh heh heh...

      All I'll say is this:

      1) Don't assume that you will love any given character that you currently love;
      2) Don't assume that you will hate any given character that you currently hate; and
      3) Don't assume that any characters at all will survive.

Oh, and 4) Don't assume that you need to pick favorites from those you currently know; tons of new characters get introduced, or fleshed out much more strongly, in every single book.

It's amazing how I went from hating certain characters to really liking them over the course of the first three books.

Such a great series to lock yourself in on a rainy/snowy day, curl up on the couch with a good supply of hot chocolate, crunchy red delicious apples and your cat/dog. All that's missing is a fireplace. I always reread the whole series before the new one comes out.

Just waiting for those dragons to mature....

Well, I'm sure most of us know that Feast has been set in final form for publication, as opposed to actually being completed... ;)

(For those who don't know, GRRM has decided to publish, as a complete book (though actually shorter than Clash and Storm) part of what he's got as Feast, focusing primarily on the Riverlands, King's Landing and Dorne. All of the chapters he'd done already on Dany and the North will be in the next book, and take place relatively simultaneously with Feast. Advantages: we get to see part of what's happening; Cersei chapters, which I'm extremely interested in; at least one new viewpoint other than Cersei; a book that doesn't take weight training to lift. Disadvantages: Jon, Dany, Stannis, Davos, Samwell, etc. all highly unlikely to be present. I forget whether Feast will involve the Iron Islands or not.)

Of course, right *after* I hit "Submit", I find the update page.

                www.georgerrmartin.com/done.html

He's going to tell "all the story for half the characters, rather than half the story for all the characters"... And the Iron Islands will be a focus in Feast. Dance will include all the stuff on the east and north that was removed from Feast.

Indeed. Also the good news here is that Dance is now already partially completed, which means that the wait shouldn't be nearly as long as it was for Feast. Huzzah!
