Re: What was your First Fantasy Novel?
Sat, March 8, 2008 - 4:25 AMThe Lion the Witch & The Wardrobe- (about 25 years ago)- I loved it! Read the series several times, and a few years later was introduced to Piers Anthony & Susan Cooper... I've never looked back ;)

Re: What was your First Fantasy Novel?
Sun, March 9, 2008 - 1:12 AMIt depends on how you define fantasy.
6th grade - A Wrinkle in Time
more traditional fantasy would be in 7th grade with The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander. My 7th grade teacher would buy books to lend out if he didn't have it in his collection. 7th grade was also the year I pretty much read the most of the popular fantasy "classics" -- Hobbit (didn't actually finish the Ring series till much later), Shannara, Thomas Covenant, Xanth, EarthSea, etc. -

Re: What was your First Fantasy Novel?
Sun, March 9, 2008 - 8:06 AMI could recite Alice in Wonderland and Lookingglass by the time I was four.
Of course they count.
Gods, I don't even want to imagine reading Covenant at 12 years old.

Re: What was your First Fantasy Novel?
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 3:47 AMMy 9th grade world cultures teacher assigned Lord Foul's Bane as extra credit- I was blown away! Shocked, and amazed- it was the first time I really encountered the reluctant anti-hero. Just found out about the most recent Thomas Covenant series... will have to check it out. -

Re: What was your First Fantasy Novel?
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 7:42 AMI think my first fantasy books would have been the Shannara series when I was in 6th grade. I was hooked from that point on.

Re: What was your First Fantasy Novel?
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 2:42 PMI'm having trouble narrowing down which came first out of all of them. (This is probably because I've been reading voraciously since a very young age - pre-kindergarten.)
Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea tales were incredibly influential for me (even to this day, I am a big believer in the Rule of Names and have several use-names and what I consider a truename that only two other people know. Oh, and yeah, I'm a geek, in case there was any question.)
The "Wrinkle In Time" series was also one of the first, for sure, and Lloyd Alexander....this is bringing back lots of cool memories!

Thu, August 21, 2008 - 4:35 PMWhat stands out most as my "beginning obsession in fantasy books" is The Blue Adept series by Piers Anthony. Then I went through and read everything I could get my hands on by him.

Thu, April 16, 2009 - 1:00 AMLike Achbar I started with Robert Howard. I friend pushed a copy of Conan the Avenger into my sweaty palm. I still remember the joy of 'the head hit the floor with a meaty slap'.

Re: What was your First Fantasy Novel?
Thu, April 16, 2009 - 1:45 AMI believe my first was Dragon Wing by Margaret Weis and Tracey Hickman. Read that in 4th grade after I went through all the fairy tale books in my school library. Twice.
