Yup - it does depend on how you define fantasy v. Sci-Fi

Fantasy uses imaginary worlds and mystical creatures within its storyline. Familiar characters of fables and mythology such as princes and princesses, knights, dragons, giants, faeries, goblins, gnomes, wizards, and witches often show up in this genre. Magic, spells, swords and sorcery, supernatural powers, talking animals, and fanciful kingdoms are welcomed stereotypes. Rooted in make-believe rather than science. Common fantasy themes include quest for precious objects, rescuing damsels in distress, and battles against discernable good and evil.

Science fiction incorporates various types of science into its story, settings, characters and the challenges that they must overcome. Scientific details, facts, and rules are either adhered to or broken, but either way, they contribute to the contextual storyline as well as the world created within the novel. Science becomes a character itself. Sci-Fi utilizes scientific elements based in reality often stretching the bounds of known scientific laws and discoveries, and thus, science fiction sometimes incorporates both science and fantasy into its fictional world.

First fantasy book - why Dr. Seuss of course!

Don't remember the exact order of the others...

C.S. Lewis, Chronicles of Narnia
Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels
Mary Stewart, Merlin series/Arthurian Saga (The Crystal Cave, Hollow Hills, Last Enchantment, Wicked Day)
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit and LoTR trilogy
Vardis Fisher, Testament of Man series
Jean M. Auel, Earth's Children series
Anne Rice, Vampire books
Jennifer Rardin, Jaz Parks series
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter Series

which turned my eye toward fantasy written for children and young adults...which is what I'm writing and includes:

Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga
L.J. Smith's Nightworld series
Melissa Marr, Wicked Lovely, Fragile Eternity
Maggie Steifvater, Lament, Ballad, Shiver
and the more Sci-Fi
Suzanne Collins, Hunger Games, Catching Fire
