Titles like that are pure marketing. It makes it much, easier for the bean counters and buyers at chains and such to know what they think they need to order.

Fantasy and Sci-fi seem so close to me.

I always disliked Space Opera.

But there are good writers in every sub-genre.

Like... Piers Anthony. One of the first authors I read.

And I read just about every original Conan book that
Rober E. Howard wrote. Those were damn good for a 14 year old.
Though the English teacher didn't like me making book reports on them.

Iguess she wanted me to be reading Jane Eyre, or something.
Something romantic, all about the magic or eternal love.
Nah, I thought. More like a massive ape on an island
trying to crush Conan's sinewy neck...

POOR WRITING!
I've read plenty that have an excellent story (they have a fully developed, beautiful world), but their storytelling is so poor I couldn't stand pulling myself through to get to the end. And tragically, several of these authors have that "compareable to Tolkien at his best." SO untrue. Makes me sick.

Over the years I have read an awful lot of books. I have read so many that I have enjoyed but quite a few that I haven't. I am beginning to develope an allorgic reaction to certain aspects of the genre. Things that really turn me off a book. Things that stop me pulling it off the shelf to read.
the review "compareable to Tolkien at his best" on the back cover
A map of the land
A glossary of terms at the back.

Is there anything that turns you off these books?
